Tension Instrument Concert Hall

Lihan Jin's Concert Hall functions as a profound meditation on the relationship between architectural form and musical experience, with its curved shell elements operating as three-dimensional metaphors for acoustic wave propagation and the invisible dynamics of sound moving through space. The sail-like forms carry associations of journey and arrival, traditionally symbolic of cultural exchange, artistic aspiration, and the transcendent potential of human creative endeavor to carry consciousness beyond mundane concerns. The predominant whiteness of the palette resonates with symbolic traditions connecting purity of tone with visual brightness, while simultaneously evoking the blank page upon which musical compositions are inscribed. The five principal curved elements may suggest the human hand with its capacity for instrumental creation, or perhaps reference the pentatonic scales fundamental to numerous musical traditions across cultures. The compound curves themselves embody mathematical relationships analogous to harmonic proportions, with the continuous sweep of each surface echoing the sustained tones that define melodic expression. The central glazed aperture revealing warm amber interior spaces functions as an architectural threshold symbol, marking the passage from quotidian urban experience into the heightened perceptual state that musical performance facilitates. The elevated viewing platform suggests aspirational values, literally raising observers above street level toward what architectural phenomenology might term a horizon of transcendence. The contextual relationship between the radically contemporary forms and the traditional urban fabric surrounding them encodes a temporal dialogue, positioning cultural continuity alongside innovative expression in productive tension. The organic quality of the curved forms evokes natural phenomena from unfurling petals to breaking waves, grounding the abstract geometry in biomorphic associations that connect human creativity with broader natural patterns of growth and transformation.

The project is based on the study of architecture and music. The design focuses on how to take inspiration from intangible music and present it in tangible architectural space. The design ultimately combines the two through "tension", a force that is prevalent in both architecture and music. The concert hall is an orchestration of walls, balconies, and acoustic panels, which are developed from a unique architectural prototype by different scales and tectonics. The dramatic contrast of old and new creates a new cultural landmark for Prague.
